F.A.Q.
General matters
How can I contact you if I have questions ?
Sorry, we are unable to answer application enquiries over the phone. Please read the relevant pages on this website. If you cannot find the answer to your question there, email us:
- at contact@st4health.fr for general enquiries about the programme,
- or at aih@st4health.fr, beh@st4health.fr or dmh@st4health.fr for specific enquiries about one of the tracks.
Are all the courses and exams in the Master's program taught in English?
Yes. No knowledge of French or any other language is required.
What kind of diploma is awarded by the ST4Health program?
The ST4Health program awards a national master's degree (DNM) from PSL University in the field of “health engineering” also frequently referred to as "biomedical engineering" in other countries.
How do I choose my track in the program?
If you enter in the first year (M1), the program is not organized by track. However, you will be asked to indicate your preferred second-year track when you apply. Depending on your background and the track of interest, some optional courses may become mandatory, as they are prerequisites for the M2 track courses. Provided that you successfully complete the M1 year, you can then pursue the M2 track of your choice. You may request a different track than the one you initially indicated. You will be asked to explain your request and demonstrate that you have met the corresponding prerequisites.
If you enter the program in the second year (M2), you will select your track when you apply.
Eligibility & Application matters
How can I apply?
Applications should be submitted online on the PSL application portal. Please refer to the “How to apply” section on the Admission page.
Am I eligible to apply to the ST4Health program?
Please refer to the “Eligibility” section on the Admission page.
Here is my CV, I would like to know if I am eligible for the program.
There are far too many higher education systems and diplomas for us to know, and we do not have the time required to assess CVs sent outside of the application procedure. Please refer to the “Eligibility” section on the Admission page.
We are open to atypical profiles, so if you meet the relevant qualifications in terms of years of study/course credits, you may apply even if your curriculum is not straightforward. You may also apply at a level lower than the one to which you are eligible if your projects warrant it. All this should be described and justified in your cover letter.
Can I apply directly to the second year (M2) ?
If you have or are currently finishing a degree equivalent to the first year of a Master (M1), you can apply directly to the second year (M2). Nevertheless, the ST4Health program is highly multidisciplinary and your specific background determines whether an entry in M1 or M2 is preferable. During the reviewing process, the admissions committee reserves the right to recommend M1 admission instead of M2.
If you have or are currently completing a Bachelor program in 3 or 4 years, you should apply to the first year (M1). In exceptional cases such as a 4-year Bachelor with extended research experience, you may ask if a direct admission to the second year is possible. In this case, please mention and justify your request in your cover letter.
Please refer to the “Eligibility” section on the Admission page for a list of typically eligible profiles for M1 and M2.
How do I choose the track for the second year (M2) if I apply to the first year (M1)?
The first year of the program (M1) is not organized into tracks. Nevertheless, we expect you to have an idea of which track you would like to study in the second year. During the online application process, you will be asked to select your preferred M2 track. You can select two tracks, ranked in order of preference.
In your cover letter, it is important that you clearly explain why you are interested in a given track and explain how it fits into your professional plan.
As a French or European student, do I need to apply through the 'Mon Master' platform?
No, the ST4Health Master's program is an exception to the 'Mon Master' platform because it is an internationally oriented program. Applications must be submitted exclusively through the PSL platform.
As a European student, what application procedure should I follow?
European students are nationals of:
- One of the 28 countries of the EU;
- A country in the EEA (EU + Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)
- Switzerland
- Monaco or Andorra
You need to apply online on the PSL application portal. Please refer to the “How to apply” section on the Admission page.
More information: Campus France European students
As a non-European student, what application procedure should I follow?
The same rule applies as for European students. You only need to apply online through the PSL application portal. Please refer to the “How to apply” section on the Admission page.
If your application is accepted, you will receive authorization to enroll at PSL University. At that point, you can begin the process of obtaining a student visa from the French consulate in your country of residence.
Campus France requires a proof of contact for my scholarship application. Can you provide this?
When you submit your application, you will receive an e-mail acknowledging that your application file has been received. This email can be used as your proof of contact.
Can you provide a letter of acceptance in advance for my scholarship application ?
Unfortunately no. You will receive an acknowledgement of your application after the application deadline, and you will be notified that your application has been accepted or rejected as soon as the jury has come to a decision. If you have not been notified yet, it means that the jury has not decided, so we cannot guarantee your acceptance at this stage.
Can I apply after the deadline or outside the regular application process?
No, applications submitted after the official deadline or outside the standard application platform will not be considered.
Are there any GPA/grade requirements?
There are no minimum GPA/grade requirements. Your application must be competitive enough for you to be pre-selected for an interview. The keys to be authorized to enroll in our program are excellence, motivation and compatibility of your professional plans.
Which English level is required to apply?
English proficiency level corresponding to at least grade C1 is expected. If your application is preselected, the jury will evaluate your command of scientific English during interview.
Is a research experience necessary to apply?
A research experience is not formally mandatory but is a plus for all applications.
Do I need to propose an internship project when applying?
No, this is not required. However, if you already have specific researchers, laboratories or topics in mind, it is beneficial to include them in your cover letter.
Should I apply as soon as possible in case there is no place left for late applications?
If possible, we recommend applying for Session 1. Applications for each session are evaluated together. The number of places available for Session 2 depends on how many places remain after Session 1.
Application file matters
What documents are required for the application file?
During the application process, you will need to submit the following items:
- All transcripts and diplomas from higher education institutions, with certified translations into French or English, if the originals are in another language;
- A CV in English;
- A cover letter in English explaining what motivates you to join the program, how it fits into your study plan and why you are a good candidate;
- Proof of an English proficiency level corresponding to at least grade C1 (IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL,etc.) or a Medium of Instruction certificate if you have recently studied for at least one-year in a program conducted in English (no certificate is needed if English is your native language);
- At least two references of professors or managers who have supervised you in an internship or employment context and who will agree to write a recommendation letter about your application.
I won’t have the grades for my last semester in time for the submission deadline. Can I still apply and complete my file once it has been submitted?
You are expected to upload the grades that are at your disposal at the time of the application session. You cannot add documents to your file after submission. However, if your application is selected for an interview, you can send the missing documents to the admission committee.
Even though documents are required by March, can I apply if I will only receive my diploma in the summer?
Yes, you can. If you are admitted, your admission letter will state that you are authorised to enrol on our programme, provided that you validate your current degree at the end of the school year. You will then need to send us proof of this as soon as possible before enrolling in September.
Which language can I use in my application?
The CV and letter of personal statement MUST be in English.
We accept the following documents in English or French only:
- Transcripts
- Diplomas
- English language certificate
- Letters of recommendation sent directly by your referees
If those documents are in a different language, you must provide a certified translation in either English or French in order for your application to be examined.
Do I need to have the documents translated by a sworn translator?
As your letter and application file should be written in French or English, the question only pertains to transcripts and diplomas. Most universities will provide a transcript in English; this is the easiest option. If you cannot obtain a certified English (or French) transcript, you should provide a translation alongside the original. If your language uses the Latin alphabet, the jury can usually verify that the grades are correct by comparing the original and the translation, so a sworn translation is not necessary. For other alphabets, a sworn translation is recommended.
Which certificate should I provide to show my level of English proficiency?
Any nationally or internationally recognized English proficiency test is accepted (IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, etc). A level corresponding to at least grade C1 is expected. If your application is preselected, the jury will evaluate your command of scientific English during interview.
If your recent studies were conducted in English (at least one-year long program), you can submit a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate from your university to fulfill this requirement. An IELTS test or equivalent might be asked after the examination and interview process, in case a confirmation of English proficiency seems necessary.
If English is your native language, no IELTS test is required.
I will only have the certificate of English proficiency after the application deadline, can I still apply ?
Yes, you can apply.
If you are admitted, your admission letter will state that you are authorised to enrol in our programme, provided that you validate an English certificate at a level C1. You will then need to send us proof of this as soon as possible before enrolling in September.
For some students already enrolled at PSL and applying to the M2 program in the context of a dual degree (e.g., Chimie ParisTech - PSL), it is possible to take your English certificate exam during the M2 year. A C1 level will be required to validate the master's degree.
Is the deadline for professors submitting a recommendation the same as the application deadline?
Yes, the applications will be evaluated in the days following the deadline so the recommendations should arrive in time if they are to be taken into account by the jury. However, your application will not be ruled out if the recommendations are late.
How can I make sure that my application is complete?
The PSL application portal provides a real-time indication of the level of completion of your application. In any case, you MUST NOT send an email to the administrative coordinator to check if your application is complete.
The only documents that may be missing in your application are:
- your transcript from the last semester of your current studies (which you will need to send as soon as you get it)
- your last diploma (which you can send later as long as your transcripts establish that you validated the corresponding degree)
- your English language certificate (you must attach a document that explains why. For example, you will be taking the test at a given later date and will send the results as soon as you get them).
If your application is not complete before the end of the application session, it will not be examined and will be moved to the next session, if any.
If I am admitted to the master's program, when will I receive the official admission letter needed for my visa application?
Once you are admitted, you will receive an email from PSL inviting you to accept your offer of admission. As soon as you accept this offer, you will automatically receive an official admission letter from PSL. This letter is sufficient to start your visa application.
Financial matters
How much are the tuition fees?
Please refer to the “Tuition fees & Scholarships” section on the Admission page.
Will I receive a stipend for my internships?
Short internships during M1 year do not come with a stipend. However, for the M2 internship during the second semester, you will receive a monthly stipend from the host laboratory. The amount is fixed by French national law and amounts to approximately €660 per month.
Please note that Master’s internships completed abroad are usually not supported by a stipend.
As an international student, which scholarships can I apply for?
Different types of scholarships are available for specific categories of students applying to the ST4Health Master's program. Note that receiving these scholarships DOES NOT GUARANTEE admission to the program. Scholarship programs have their own calendars and selection criteria. IN ALL CASES, you must also follow the application procedure and apply to the ST4Health Master’s program. Please refer to the “How to apply” section on the Admission page.
PSL PhD track here.

Scholarships from the student's country or from bilateral funding programs.
We strongly recommend that you look for other scholarships on your side (ask the French embassy in your country) because French scholarships are extremely competitive and they usually give priority to newcomers–i.e., students who have never been to France before.
Can I apply for an Eiffel scholarship?
No applications will be submitted to the Eiffel program this coming year 2026-2027. It will be possible from next Academic Year 2027-2028. As with the PSL PhD track, PSL university sets the deadline for applying for the Eiffel Scholarship in November-December, usually, to allow time for applications to be reviewed.
How much money will I need to attend the program and live in Paris?
You will need your own personal computer. Books and educational materials cost around €300 per year. Living in Paris is expensive. The cost of a student room is usually between €500 and €900 per month.
Is the daily workload compatible with part-time work ?
The program is very demanding and equivalent to a full-time job. We do not recommend working on the side, unless it is a part-time student job that takes up no more than a few hours a week.
Please note: Attendance at the courses is mandatory, and the schedule may be modified during the year. No schedule or syllabus will be provided before the kick-off meeting.
Practical matters
Where can I find the program schedule?
We do not provide a schedule before the kick-off meeting. Please note that it is a full-time program, and we do not recommend having a job on the side, especially since personal work will take as much time as classes.
The first semester begins the first week of September, and you must be registered before the semester starts. Then, there is a two-week break for Christmas and New Year's. The second semester begins and ends in mid-July or mid-September, depending on the track you attend. Please refer to the Admission page for dates.
How long are the classes each day?
Courses will typically run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., however there are exceptions. The detailed schedule will be available on line before the beginning of the course. These three hours combine lectures and others activities, such as workshops. Practical courses in particular can last much longer (practicals only end when the experiment is finished, so the given schedule is not binding). Additionally, some courses (among which are language courses, methodology tutorials and section seminars) take place during the midday break or in the evening.
Where are the courses?
Most classes and activities take place at the ESPCI Paris and PariSanté Campus sites:
- ESPCI Paris
- PariSanté Campus
Both sites can be easily reached by public transportation. If needed, course planning is organized to give enough time to go from one site to another (45 min).
Do PSL University and ESPCI Paris offer accommodation?
Unfortunately, we are not able to guarantee housing for master students.
For international students, help about housing search and preparing your stay in Paris is provided through the PSL Welcome Desk .
Is the kick-off meeting mandatory?
Yes, it is. All students (M1 and M2) must attend. It usually takes place on the first week of September.
Can I start the year later in case I don’t obtain my visa on time?
No. You must be present from the very beginning of the year. The kick-off meeting is mandatory.
Is it possible to start the year in January?
No, the school year starts in September only and lasts until June at least (it can last until the end of September if the student has to take resit exams or if his/her oral defence takes place in September. It happens when the student prolongs his/her internship over the summer for example).
Can I take the program as part of a distance learning program?
No, this is not possible. With a few exceptions, the courses in the master's program are only available in person. Students MUST attend ALL the courses they are enrolled in.
Can students take a gap year during the program, and when is it possible?
Yes, students can take a gap year during the Master's program. It can be taken:
- Before starting the program,
- Between semesters,
- Between M1 and M2.
The gap year can last one semester or a full academic year, with flexibility to split across two academic years if approved
